Of the estimated 7000 Southern Right Whales in the southern hemisphere, about 2000 make the journey to the South African coast every year, making this an ideal place to spot these gracious creatures. Whale season happens from late June to mid November, with the prime spot for viewing being in Hermanus in the Cape Overberg region. Hermanus offers many festivities during whale season, and hosts the annual Hermanus Whale Festival during September every year.

Penguins

A good way to see the 3000 African penguins (Sphenisus demersus) is on the wheelchair-friendly wooden boardwalk at Foxy Beach, accessible via the information centre on Kleintuin Road.

Shark Expeditions

There are plenty of shark-related expeditions available from diving trips to boat trips and aquariums. For divers, the choice is massive. There are wreck dives, shore dives, open water dives and more. The Cape coastline is an ideal place to see the protected Great White Shark, and you don't have to be a scuba diver to enjoy these fascinating predators up close. Experienced professionals operate along Gansbaai and Mossel Bay, knowing the best places to spot the sharks.

Cape Peninsula baboons

Beware of these naughty beach boys Baboon viewing in Cape Town can be very rewarding, but an important warning first: do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. The population is under increasing pressure from habitat decline and fragmentation, as well as conflict between humans and baboons, which occurs often.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden

Cape Town, South Africa (Image: www.capetown.travel)The Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, not only for its spectacular view of the nearby Table Mountain, but also because the garden specialises in South Africa's indigenous plants, here you will experience the Cape flora in its diversity - something for which the garden is renowned - plus other South African indigenous plants including rich collections of bulbs, alpines and ferns. All these species grow naturally in the Southern Africa and can be found in the main house - along with a big baobab tree.

Spring Wild Flowers

From late July to October the Cape's West Coast offers a most spectacular display of Daisies and wild flowers, in bright colours and snow whites. The West Coast National Park offers incredible viewing at the Postberg nature reserve with the azure waters of the Langebaan Lagoon playing a scenic backdrop. Langebaan offers many guest-house options to seasonal visitors, or take a day-tour from Cape Town central. Visitors also flock to quaint Darling and Paternoster to see this colourful display.
